John Mahoney, the Basilica's maintenance supervisor for the past 30 years, passed away on August 27, 2023 at 7:13pm, while hospitalized with pneumonia and a pulmonary embolism. John was about to retire from his job within the week, having completed 34 years of service at Sts. Peter and Paul. His family was by his side, and Fr. Carter administered the full last rites to John. Please pray the Rosary and the Divine Mercy Chaplet for John Mahoney's soul.

Obituary of John Paul Mahoney
August 29, 1958 – August 27, 2023
John Paul Mahoney, 64, of East Ridge went home to be with his Lord on August 27, 2023.
John Paul was born in Dunlap, TN on August 29, 1958 to the late, Junior and Marion Mahoney. John Paul was an avid lover of the outdoors, he particularly enjoyed riding his ATV and going “off-road”. He enjoyed fishing, playing softball, and “full contact” volleyball with the family. He was an expert “rock thrower”. John Paul served his church as a Maintenance Supervisor for over 30+ years at the Basilica of Sts. Peter & Paul and he was a member of the church for all of his life. John Paul was a beautiful blessing to his family and all that knew him. He was a giver of things, especially other peoples stuff.

Left behind to cherish John Paul’s memory are his brothers and sisters and their spouses, Pam (Robin) Rudd, Becky (Larry) Elam, Emilie (Squeek) Cavin, Chris (Patti) Mahoney, Pat (Karen) Mahoney, Mike (Toni Goodman) Mahoney, and Mark (Teresa) Mahoney, several nieces and nephews, many great-nieces and great-nephews, and many special friends.
A Funeral Mass of Christian Burial will be held in the Basilica of Sts. Peter & Paul on Saturday September 2, 2023 at 1:00 pm with Father David Carter officiating. The family will receive friends on Friday, September 1, 2023 at the East Chapel of Chattanooga Funeral Home from 6:00 to 8:00pm. He will be laid to rest with his parents in the Mount Olivet Cemetery in East Ridge. Serving as pallbearers will be John Paul’s brothers, and his nephews, Nick Whitfield and Dylan Mahoney.
The family would like to give special thanks to his nephew, Lance Elam who took such good care of John Paul.
In lieu of flowers memorial contributions in John Paul’s name can be made to either the Basilica of Sts. Peter & Paul or to St. Jude Children’s Hospital.

Update 8/27/23: John Mahoney took a turn for the worse in the ER. He is suffering from a pulmonary embolism. He has been fully anointed with all the last rites prayed over him. The rest is in the hands of God. Please keep praying for him.
